AGARTALA, August 26 (TIWN): Medical council of India has recently issued a letter to AGMC to authorities asking them to submit a compliance report within next 1 month, which has brought a question on the future of AGMC. The present status of AGMC will be now at risk, To maintain the status of the degree course and recognition status of the college it’s very urgent to submit the reports on the part of AGMC. Reliable sources from AGMC told TIWN that after crossing 11 years of its establishment, AGMC lacks basic infrastructure and facilities. However, it’s to be mentioned here that during a sudden inspection on June'2015, the MCI team have found several deficiencies particularly related with the required numbers of faculties necessary to run MBBS course effectively. The maximum allowed deficiency is 10%. In spite of several deceptive methods to fool the MCI inspectors by showcasing temporarily posted medical officers from Tripura Health Services as junior faculties of AGMC, the deficiency was around 13.2%.

Unless proper remedial measures taken such as timely promotion of elegible local faculties to professor rank, the overall situation is unlikely to improve.

During the stint of Tripura's most hopeless Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty, AGMC's decline started which now reached almost to point of no return.

The basic needs lacking at AGMC  which fulfill the criteria as a complete institution:

1.     Not sufficient regular faculties and the institution is running by temporary staffs.
2.     Violation in promotion of the faculties.

AGMC is now at its 11th years, by this time, at least 80% of total faculties must be on regular basis. But situation is just opposite. But Till date only around 20% of facilities have been regularised at their respective posts. All others are either serving on contract basis or as Ad-hoc faculties. However, they are show as regular employees to the visiting  MCI teams, says reports.

2nd issue is related with the timely promotion of eligible local faculties belonging to Tripura to higher posts such as to Professor posts. This could have helped to minimize the deficiency at the higher posts and thus help to maintain the recognition status of MBBS & MD courses.

Thus it’s to be mentioned that the sudden visit of AGMC has given rise to such circumstances as this shall determine the future of the continuation of the official recognition of the MBBS degree in AGMC, which is one of the two most renowned medical colleges of Tripura.

The AGMC authorities are facing a tough time in offering an explanation to the visiting MCI team, owing to the poor utilization of funds sanctioned by the center.
