AGARTALA, August 18 (TIWN): Advent of monsoon brought with it bad roads. Rain hasn’t stopped yet but the contractors, as always, are having a field day with their substandard construction works yet again. Construction work of concrete pavements being carried out at New Capital Complex area here is one such example.

“With the kind of work they are doing, it will be damaged in no time,” shared a bus  driver.

When contacted by this news portal Engineer – in – chief, PWD Sunil Bhowmik accepted the fact that the quality of work is bad and that his department has been bearing the brunt for the bad quality.

The condition of the roads in the city has exposed the shoddy work that was undertaken before the monsoon. The black top has been cleaned up at many places exposing potholes and uneven stretches making the journey of motorists dangerous. The toppings have flown with rain water and accumulated in small mounds creating natural speed breakers.

It only shows the shoddy quality of work that was undertaken by the contractors. Roads in the city are largely managed by PWD..

Most of the roads which were repaired a few months ago by both the PWD have developed huge cracks and potholes.

Locals allege a nexus between mafias, PWDofficials and contractors which resulted in either material of poor quality being used or work not done properly.

Some motorists told TIWN that the substandard work and failure of authorities to take up pre-monsoon road maintenance are responsible for the messy state of affairs.

Traffic police confirmed that driving has not been easy. "Many persons have sustained injuries as their two-wheelers slipped on the gravel-scattered roads or were hit by stones ricocheting off four-wheelers," cops told TIWN.
