AGARTALA, June 16 (TIWN): Crime against women has declined by numbers in the state, says Chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women Purnima Dey on Monday.

Talking to TIWN correspondent, Tripura women commission Chairperson Purnima Dey said that the “report” of number of crimes in the commission has decreased over past few months and on this basis it is estimated   by the commission that the crime against women has slightly declined.

Adding to this, she also said that, apart from all other crimes imposed on the women, today the women are becoming the victim of domestic violence at large.  Domestic violence against women is an age old phenomenon. Women were always considered weak, vulnerable and in a position to be exploited. Violence has long been accepted as something that happens to women. Cultural mores, religious practices, economic and political conditions may set the precedence for initiating and perpetuating domestic violence, but ultimately committing an act of violence is a choice that the individual makes out of a range of options.

However, it might be possible that, the number of report of crime has declined but still everyday women are falling in the trap of crime and in societies with a patriarchal power structure and with rigid gender roles, women are often poorly equipped to protect themselves if their partners become violent and they are threatened to remain silent.

Husbands, who batter wives typically feel that they are exercising a right, maintaining good order in the family and punishing their wives is a process of proving their manhood, said Tripura women commission Chairperson.

Speaking about Rape she further added that, in most cases, the person committing rape is someone charged with protecting the girl or woman. It could be someone in their homes, in the neighborhood, or at school. Most of the rapes were committed by persons are known to the victim.

Rapes happen because of unbridled sexual desire, sexual frustration, and challenge to established patriarchy and to prove their manhood they carry out the heinous crime of rape and sometime illicit relationship between the two persons take the shape of rape when caught red-handed by the families. Rape is an outcome of huge frustration and mental sickness which bounds the accused to rape an infant to minor to widow to old ladies.

The Women’s Commission tries to help victims of rape by offering them assistance and by announcing prompt punishment to the accused, said Tripura women commission Chairperson Purnima Dey.

Interestingly, altogether 196 rape cases were registered here in Tripura till January 2015 with the record in the Financial Year (FY) 2014-15 shows a hefty climb to the crimes against women. Tripura witnessed 840 cases relating to crime against women till January, 2015, out of which 196 are rape cases. A total of 107 rape cases were lodged during the financial year 2013-14, whereas during the previous FY the figures rested at 108. However but the figures jumped to 196 during the 2014-15 FY. Rape and other crimes against women, girl children has become a daily news feed here in the state with the govt. has put a serious negligence to it, as a result the rate of crimes have increased at an alarming rate in Tripura.

According to the Crimes in India 2013 report published by National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB), Tripura had registered 1628 cases of various crimes against women during 2013, now question arise how can the women commission authority claim that the crime against women has declined in the state.
