KAMALPUR, JUNE 12 (TIWN): 2013 and 2015. Two separate years, two separate victims. Both were arrested regarding cases of completely different perspectives. But both suffered the same fate of being died at the lock-up of Kamalpur police either on spot or in hospital. Yes, within a span of last three years starting from 2013, Kamalpur police station somehow snatched the loves of two persons. And mysteriously, police in both the cases remained busy in shedding off responsibilities. Although, five children altogether lost their fathers and two girls witnessed the shattering of their dreams.

On 5th June, 2015 last, police arrested one Bijoy Deb (37) from Noagaon area due to intake of heavy liquor and creating public nuisance. The police of Kamalpur police station arrested him around 10 pm and around 2-30 am that very night the parents and family members of Bijoy were informed that, he died at the lock-up around 12 midnight. Next day, Congress staged protest. PCC President Birajit Sinha visited Kamalpur and  demanded stringent action against the police officials and compensation for the bereaved family. Primarily, police suspended ASI Maniklal Mahanta, who arrested Bijoy, Habilder Ratan Das and Constable Pandiram Reang. But another ASI Tapan Sarkar, who was also with Manik to arrest Bijoy got relieved. Now, the traditionally CPINM supporter family of Bijoy faced social threats as they sought help from Congress. Meanwhile, a delegation of BJP led by Tripura in-charge Sunil Deodhar visited the deceased’s house on 8th June last and assured of being with the family. But the saga of the family is that, they are facing it tough to earn a meager meal a day. More importantly, though CID staged its effort to look into the matter, but police of  Kamalpur police station got busy in denying any sort of problem regarding the incident and claiming themselves as “government hooligans” ( sarkari gunda) to work at will.

Way back in 2013, the same police arrested one jewelry businessman of Manikbhander namely Benu Shuklabaidya regarding the buying of stolen jwellery of Goddess Kali of Kamaleswari Kali temple of Kamalpur. The theft occurred on 15th March, 2013. Police arrested three under aged boys from Ramdurlabhpur area on 20th April, 2013. On their information, police arrested one jwellery businessman Benu Shuklabaidya on 21st April night. On 22nd April police took him for six days’ police custody. After the inhuman torture Benu became seriously ill and for further treatment he was shifted to SSKM Hospital on 3rd May, 2015 where he succumbed to injuries on that very day. Benu’s family yet not got any help or compensation as was assured by the top cops at that time. Not only that, due to poor economic condition Benu’s daughter had to leave her studies though she was a 10th Standard Board examinee then. His only boy also had to adieu studies. Still the family struggles for a bare living.

Now, in the midst of hurly-burly and assurances would Bijoy’s family be a case of unending deprivation like that of Benu or the ‘golden administration’s police’ would show minimum humanity, is the matter to be  seen.
