Farmers demand to repair sluice gate at Manu village: Role of Agriculture department under scanner

BELONIA/AGARTALA, May 19 (TIWN): The poor farmers of Manu Village under Bagafa Block demanded to repair the sluice gate which was remained collapse during last 5 years. They also demanded to set up a lift irrigation pump to get higher yield of agricultural crops.

Sources said that agricultural production has been hampering seriously for long time due to problem of sluice gate. The farmers failed to fulfill their demand after lodging complain at block office. According to sources the poor farmers of Braja Mohan Jamatia Para under Manu Village of Bagafa Block demanded to construct a sluice gate to facilitate irrigation at the farm land. Although the sluice gate was constructed according to the demand of farmers, it went out of order within few days.

As a result the ray of hope for good crops among farmers went in vein within few days. Sources said that majority of population under the large panchayat are involved with agrarian works. During interaction the farmers said that they were able to produce crops 60 to 70 Hectare land when the sluice gate was functioning.

But farming is limited within 7 to 8 Kani at present. The farmers alleged that the department had no initiative to repair the gate after lodging complaint to repair it. As a result they have to continue cultivation by lifting water by machine. The farmers are suffering due to negligence of Agriculture department.
