Discontent among local medical faculties of AGMC over promotion and regularization issues

Agartala, May 6 (TIWN): There are around 30 Professors in AGMC (including the present Principal Prof K K Kundu). Most of them barring a few are available at the station only 4-5 days in a month, Many of them are departmental Heads in different pre, para and clinical departments but they are not regularly taking classes for undergraduates and post graduates or overseeing their respective departmental works.

These 'white elephant' type faculties are a burden on the state budget as they are taking Rs.94,000 per month plus other allowances and facilities without rendering adequate services to uphold or increase the quality of medical education or patient related services in the AGMC.

If they were available throughout the month then not only the medical students but also the patients being admitted in the GB Hospital were likely likely to get better services under their experienced supervisions in different departments. The Principal Prof Kundu fares far better in comparison to most of other senior level faculties and generally spends at least 2 wks per month.

However he has to actually act like a paper head person as the main control on almost every matters in the medical college is in the hands of a few senior medical officers from Tripura Health Services who are allegedly very close to the Melarmath based CPI(M) party office. These few so called 'comrade' doctors are also allegedly behind huge misappropriations of central funds meant for development of AGMC. A special post named 'Administrator' of AGMC is also heard to be in process of being created just to accommodate and lengthen the services of one such tainted officers who is about to get retired next year and at present holds both the post of M.O. In-charge of Medical College Project (MCP) plus the post of Joint Director of Medical Education. Such type of post named as Administrator is not there in other medical colleges in India but in the golden era of so called alternative policies in our state these irregular practices are touching new heights.

Many local faculties are working at the level of Associate Professor and are now eligible to become Professor in their respective departments as per the MCI guideline but in stead of giving due promotions to these hard working local faculties, preferences are being given to continue services of the 'white elephant' type of outsider professors due to some unknown reasons. This is effecting the moral and overall working atmosphere of the Medical College. Also it has been learnt that even after 10 years completion of AGMC, most of the junior faculties in the posts of Turor, Senior Resident and Assistant Professor are still working on Ad-Hoc basis and their appointments are being extended every year for last one decade. These faculties generally bear the majority of burden of providing patients care and also provide medical education in their respective departments. They are generally shown on paper as 'Regular' employees to any visiting MCI teams but are actually awaiting their long due regularization process for last many years which keeps on getting delayed due to unknown reasons under one pretexts or another.

The due promotions of Associate Professors to the Professor level and also regularization  of the eligible local faculties at the junior levels shall not only boast the moral of serving faculties. .A stitch in time saves nine'  and possibly may have a positive impact in increasing the quality of services in the Agartala Govt Medical College.
