Tripura goes for TTAADC poll on Sunday : 758554 voters to cast vote by EVM

AGARTALA, May 3 (TIWN): With the first ever of its kind the Election Commission of India introduced Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) to the general elections to Tripura Tribal Areas and Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which are scheduled to be held in the state on May 3, 2015. The counting of votes would take place on May 6.According to the notification issued for the poll, the term of office of the current District Council is slated to expire on May 19. The new District Council would have to be constituted before the expiry of the current District Council.EVMs have been used in Tripura since 2003 assembly polls but this is the first time that the Left-ruling state Tripura to go for poll this year with the EVMs for ADC voters. Traditionally, ballot papers have been in use for ADC polls since 1982.State Election Officer S K Rakesh earlier informed that the ECI has sanctioned 1,450 EVMs for holding elections in 1,070 booths in the tribal areas. About 7.58 lakhs voters will exercise their franchise this time in EVM. A total 758554 voters comprising of 383437 male and 375117 female are going to cast their votes for the 28 seats of the TTAADC. There has been an increase of 19 percent in the number of voters as compared to 2010 voter's list, in which there were 637240 voters.

The tale begins with a fresh election under the Sixth Schedule had been held on June 30, 1985 through vote by secret ballot and the elected members were sworn in on July 19, 1985.

 During the year 2000 here in Tripura with the victory of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) backed by the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) in the ADC at gun-point.

The last election to ADC came off on May 3, 2010 and the Left Front retained power in the Council by making a clean sweep of all 27 seats-election had been countermanded in one seat following the death of the BJP candidate.

Tripura ADC is currently under CPM rule with all the 28 seats in the council belonging to it.
