AGARTALA, February 24 (TIWN): State Govt had cancelled the license of 33 medical shops in the year 2013 and 2014, says Health Minister Badal Choudhury. While the unavailability of generic medicines became a nightmare for the common people of the State, the spurious medicines and illegal medicines sold at local drug stores leading the life of the patients to death. Besides these chemist shops are selling the medicines at exaggerated prices which is impossible for the patients to buy. In some cases, Drug Inspectors not interested in any enquiry, keeping eyes closed in exchange of bribe. It is to be said that in the year 2013, license of 8 medical shops were suspended. But drastically it increased to 25 in the year 2014. A highly placed source in the Tripura Police said that preliminary investigations after recovery of illegal drugs in Tripura revealed that drugs which contain substantial amount of codeine phosphate, e.g., Phensedyl or newer cough syrups like Linctus and Recodex, Alprazolam, Morphine, Diazepam, Nitrazepam, etc, are being illegally imported from Delhi, making way for smuggling from Tripura into Bangladesh.

However, after the exchange of duties from earlier Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty and the appearance of Badal Choudhury in Health and Family Welfare Department, few important steps and initiatives are taken for the welfare of this respective department.
The semi-porous Indo-Bangla international border are used as corridors for passage of these drugs that are then used as cheap and affordable alternative to alcoholic beverages.
On the other hand, pharmaceutical drugs have been the big thing for the past five years in Tripura.
With large cache of prescription drugs caught by the police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and even larger ones going unnoticed, the state has gradually shaped itself into the safest corridor in India’s Northeast for passage of contraband drugs into the adjoining territory of Bangladesh.
