TIWN
KAMALPUR, January 12 (TIWN): Time has leaped forward with giant strides. Many traditions and rituals have become outdated with the passing time. Still, Poush Parban (The traditional Bengali celebration of the end of the Bengali month Poush) reminds every Bengali of baked and fried scones and other sweets.
Poush parban in our state also reminds of family picnic in the temporary straw house which is popularly known as Burir ghar (the house of the old woman) or Beraberir ghar (house made of straw and bamboo) in different regions of the state.
However, gone are those days when the sweet smells of scones etc. made the house filled with incredible scents. Now, the scones have shifted to the shops and many prefer to buy those items from the shops.
But this change of tradition has yet failed to restrain the youths from organizing straw houses and to enjoy the end of poush in traditional way. At different places of this subdivision the school goers and even elderly persons are found in shaping such houses.
Those houses will be burnt in the dawn of the Sankranti (last day of Poush) after bathing and all the neighbors would make themselves warm with the heat of this burning house. Then the breakfast would be arranged with home-made scones.
Though the tradition of breakfast has changed dramatically, but the tradition of family picnic in the straw house and the burning of the house in the next morning still continue. This tradition completely indigenous to the people of Tripura still continues even in this era of speed and technology. And this continuance of the tradition is the main tune of our culture and unity which would surely protect and enrich our gen next.
