AGARTALA, Oct 6 (TIWN): On Tuesday, Tripura Govt failed to submit details on Section 144 imposition in Sadar in Tripura High Court. The High Court has given more time to the State Govt and on 7th October (tomorrow), the affidavit has to be submitted. Court also has sought the entire file of the District Magistrate which has recorded details on Section 144 imposition. Total two cases were filed in the High Court against Section 144 and both cases’ hearing was today. The petitioners claimed that Section 144 has violated the fundamental rights of the common men. Section 144 was imposed from September 21st to November 4.
Banning all political rallies, West Tripura DM had imposed Section 144 on September 21st up to November 4. Alleging the move is misuse of the CrPC to curb people’s freedom of speech and to suppress the opposition voices, Advocate Samarjit Bhattacharjee, who is also a Human Rights activist filed a petition in the High Court on September 28. Lawyer Purushottom Roy Barman was present on behalf of the petitioner. The Advocate General on that day had argued against the legal ground’s validity in the petition. The High Court had accepted the plea and issued a notice to the State Govt. The Court had also sought replies by October 5, but today the State Govt has failed to submit the reply.
Advocate Purushottom Roy Barman has stated that the Section 144 is a direct attack on Democracy and violation of fundamental rights.
