After 30 years of intensive development, China has successfully transformed its bamboo sector from a traditional, small-scale sector with manual processing, into an emerging modern rural industry, which balances economic growth and the environment, and provides sustainable rural livelihoods and contributes to mountain forestry. This workshop will provide a chance to delve into China’s experiences in bamboo-based development from a holistic point of view, with topics encompassing policy, technologies, stakeholders, supply-chain, the environment etc., and conducted by experts. The event will take place in two locations in Zhejiang Province – Lin’an and Anji - as model case studies; the workshop will show how bamboo has enabled the poor mountainous communities to achieve sustainable economic development, while addressing local environmental, economic and social issues.

In addition to the bamboo sector, the workshop will also provide opportunities to study other NTFP production in China, including traditional Chinese medicine, edible fungi, honey, hickory nuts, wild flowers and vegetables. The development of NTFPs in China is a combination of sustainable resource cultivation, highly-efficient industrial processing and marketing networks. NTFPs and their production has become one of the main pillars of economic development in the forest areas of China.

This workshop will provide a platform for people from various fields, who are concerned with NTFP development, rural development, environmental protection, natural resource management, etc., to share and explore best practices and lessons learned in sustainable and integrated sector development in developing countries.

Sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, People’s Republic of China is a central governmental agency under the state Council and it is responsible for the nation's science and technology activities. One of the important missions of MOST is to strengthen international cooperation in science and technology.

Organized by Lin'an Modern Forestry Technology Service Center (LMFTSC) is a non-governmental organization in Lin'an, Zhejiang Province, China which provides training and consultancy services to governments, farmers and enterprises. It works with a number of Chinese forestry research institutes and universities and has been involved in more than 40 provincial forestry research projects.

INBAR (International Network for Bamboo and Rattan) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to reducing poverty, conserving the environment and creating more equitable trade through bamboo and rattan. INBAR was established in 1997 and represents a growing number of member countries all over the world. Valuation key:

I am very glad on behalf of North Eastern Region States, India that I could 2nd time participate and experience the vast knowledge on the use and importance of bamboos in different fields from the workshop. We are born with bamboos and dies with bamboos which means at the time of born our culturally bamboos are required and at the time of dead, cremation is done by bamboos for burring. We never realize how important the bamboos are. When we look back at its uses- it has many uses and meaning to the society and its culture. We have been using it in many ways – say the main earlier shutter for the rural people of Kingdom is bamboo hut not only that we have been enjoying the taste of bamboo shoot say the main curry of our rural people in North-Eastern India that particular bamboo shoot season. Likewise, as we enjoy the bamboos most of the North-Eastern India people also enjoy it say from birth to death which include for making shelter, foods, Weapons, etc.

The workshop object of the report bamboo roots level is to bring awareness the knowledge the day to days uses of bamboos through bamboo technology, commercial plantation in large quantizes, scientific management, village level management and preservation and the comparison of processing of bamboos the past and the present, In a very special way, I would like to focus the bamboo sector area of kingdom so that the people living in that particular area get the benefit of it through value addition as it was done by the Government. The main bamboo recourses provide within the rural people area in china but when we look at them they are proved with their resources.

The main people enjoying the resources are high rural. So, from this point of view it is very good to note that say any Government power did help much for the welfare of the rural people especially in commercial site instead they bribe the resources. So, it will be wise that the rural people get the facilities of the support by the Government in practically by work.

I would like to thank for the 2nd time scholarship received from Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of People’s Republic of China, Prof. Zhu Zhaohun, Former Dy. Director and Life Member of INBAR, Bejiang, China, Prof. Wang Anguo, Lin'an Modern Forestry Technology Service Center, Lin'an, Zhejiang Province, China, Ms. Jin Wei, INBAR, China, Government of Lina’n, Anji Forestry Bureau and my colleagues of many countries (15 countries participants) and many other unknown faces that supported me for preparing the news.
