AGARTALA, Sep 29 (TIWN): A Tipra Motha candidate was injured in a gun attack at Warengbari under R.K. Pur police station in Gomati district during the Village Committee elections on Monday. The injured candidate was identified in reports as Khachindra Reang, who sustained a bullet injury and was initially admitted to Gomati District Hospital. Two other Tipra Motha supporters were also injured in the incident.

Opposition leader Jiten Chowdhury visited the injured candidate at Gomati District Hospital. Taking a dig at the BJP-led government, Chowdhury said the incident was “another example” of the state having no law and order.

He also claimed that the people responsible would eventually be arrested but suggested that they could later be released following a phone call.

The incident has since led to renewed tension in parts of Gomati district. Tipra Motha supporters demanded the immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the shooting and staged a road blockade at Maharani on Tuesday. The protesters said they would continue their agitation until police take concrete action.

Tipra Motha MDC CK Jamatia has also demanded the arrest of those allegedly responsible. According to his statement, party workers had provided police with information about a vehicle allegedly linked to the incident, while witnesses were also ready to assist the investigation. Police had not publicly confirmed the identity of any accused at the time of the latest reports.

The situation became more tense after the shooting, with clashes reported in the Gamaria–Maharani area. Gomati district SP Anirban Das was reportedly injured during the subsequent unrest, while the official vehicle of Udaipur SDPO Debanjali Roy was allegedly vandalised. Security forces were deployed to control the situation.

Meanwhile, the State Election Commission described the overall Village Committee polling as peaceful and fair, although several incidents of violence and confrontation were reported from parts of Gomati district. The Commission said the overall polling percentage had crossed 79 per cent, with voters who were already in queues allowed to cast their votes.

As of the latest available reports on Tuesday, the investigation into the Warengbari shooting was continuing and arrests had not been publicly confirmed.
