NEW DELHI, Sep 16: Indian equity markets were heading toward a cautious recovery on Wednesday after a sharp sell-off in the previous session pushed the benchmark Nifty 50 to its lowest level in five months.

Indian Markets Look for Recovery After Nifty Hits Five-Month Low

On Tuesday, the Nifty 50 fell 279.50 points, or 1.19%, to close at 23,118.60, while the BSE Sensex declined 777.94 points, or 1.04%, to settle at 74,003.82. The fall came amid concerns over rising crude oil prices, higher global bond yields and expectations surrounding the next U.S. Federal Reserve interest-rate decision.

Market sentiment remained under pressure as Brent crude moved above $100 a barrel and approached $110. Higher oil prices are particularly important for India because the country depends heavily on imports to meet its crude oil requirements. A sustained rise in crude prices can increase the country's import bill and add pressure on inflation and the rupee.

Foreign investors have also remained cautious. Foreign portfolio investors withdrew around ?2,977.86 crore from Indian equities on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors purchased approximately ?2,686.05 crore worth of shares.

Despite Tuesday's decline, early indicators on Wednesday pointed toward a possible recovery. GIFT Nifty futures indicated a positive opening, while technical indicators suggested that markets could regain some of their lost ground.

However, analysts continued to caution that the broader environment remains uncertain. Apart from crude oil, investors are closely watching U.S. monetary policy and global bond yields. A higher interest-rate environment in the United States can influence capital flows toward emerging markets such as India.

The rupee is another concern. It closed at ?95.955 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday after weakening for seven consecutive sessions. The Reserve Bank of India is believed to have intervened in the foreign-exchange market to limit excessive volatility.

With oil prices, foreign flows and global interest rates dominating investor attention, the Indian market is likely to remain sensitive to international developments in the near term.
