NEW DELHI, Aug 5 (TIWN): Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Us-Zaman has taken over the reins of the interim government. This comes a little over a month after he was appointed the country's army chief.
Zaman on Monday announced that the Army will take over the government following discussions with representatives of all parties. He also urged the protesting students to stay calm and go home, adding that there is no need of curfew or emergency in the country.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and fled the country amid escalating violence and protests demanding her resignation.
She would leave for London via India, said report.
According to sources, Hasina left Dhaka on Monday at 2:30 pm from Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister's official residence, on a military helicopter. She was accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, and headed to a "safer place."
A senior official from the Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office confirmed Hasina's departure as violence erupted. Her current whereabouts are unknown, and the situation in Dhaka remains highly volatile.
Thousands of protesters have stormed Hasina's official residence, defying a military curfew. The protests were sparked by widespread demonstrations against a quota system reserving 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans from Bangladesh's 1971 War of Independence.
