Agartala, Aug 23 (TIWN): At the time when the skyrocketing price of vegetables and essential commodities have put the people of middle class and lower middle-class in extreme trouble in commodity market, the halt in the supply of commodities due to the landslide at Phangsangbasti near Sonarpur in Meghalaya has added a jolt with additional hike in price of vegetables.

Ahead of Durga Puja, the shot up prices of most of the widely consumed vegetables after the landslide have created a huge problem. The sudden increases of vegetable prices have seriously hit the common men.

Almost all vegetables in the city’s markets have become costlier, with many becoming out of reach of the middle class family, potato at Rs 30 per kg, onion at Rs 40 to 50 per kg, pointed gourd (potol) and ribbed gourd (jhinga) at Rs 40 per kg, cabbage at Rs 50 to 60 per kg, cauliflower at Rs 80 per kg and pumpkin at Rs 30 per kg. It is tough for a middle class family to manage things when prices are hitting the roof.

Rising prices of vegetables have upset budgets of middle and lower class families, particularly affecting those below the poverty line. The fact that prices of vegetables have increased further has created great dissatisfaction. The rise in vegetable price has come as a double-shocker for the denizens.

With the price hike of vegetables, it is getting hard to plan and implement monthly budgets. It is better not to mention the plight of daily wage earners and senior citizens, who find it difficult to meet the rising expenditure. However, the people of low income suffer greatly and pass there days in constant anxiety. They find it, difficult to make their both ends meet.
