AGARTALA, August 17 (TIWN): The Manu assembly constituency would go for by-election on September 13, an official communiqué from the Election Commission of India (ECI). The notification for by-election would be issued on August 20. Nomination papers would be accepted till August 27. The papers would be scrutinized till August 28. The submitted nomination papers can be withdrawn latest by August 30. While polling would be conducted on September 13, counting of votes would be done on September 16. The constituency went vacant after sitting MLA and minister Jitendra Chaudhury was elected as Member of Parliament from the East Tripura parliament constituency. Left nominee for the East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency Jitendra Chowdhury won the battle of ballots in the 2014 Lok Sabha election by bagging 5,94,006 votes while its arch rival Congress’s Sachitra Debbarma secured 1,33,458 votes.
All India Trinamool Congress candidate - Bhriguram Reang got 74,065 votes while BJP nominee Parikshit Debbarma secured only 58388 votes. According the election result, the battle of ballots in the state was one-sided with opposition failing to put up any resistance to the ruling party.
While there were a number of angry demonstrations in Manu constituency following his selection from the CPI (M) to contest the Lok Sabha polls, the ruling CPI (M) continued to be adamant in denying the public sentiment. The popular leader won with a record margin of 4,60,548 votes.
