Agartala, Oct 10(TIWN): The Bangladesh government has approved the site selected for opening up of Border Haat at Kamalasagar along Indo – Bangla border in West Tripura District of Tripura to boost border trade, Industry Minister Jitendra Choudhury said on Thursday at civil secretariat.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said that ADM Brahmanbari district of Bangladesh, Najama Begum who is also the chairman of Kamalasagar border haat management committee informed about Bangladesh government approval.
He said, “Once established the Border Haat would be the first of its kind along the border with Bangladesh and its operationalization is expected to provide impetus to development activities for the people living close to the border areas”.
Meanwhile, Mr. Choudhury also expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh government for approval.”The initiative would bolster economic activities and offer gainful employment to locals of the border areas”.
The Tripura government has proposed to set up four 'Border Haats' along the border with Bangladesh. They will sell local agricultural and horticultural products, spices, minor forest products (excluding timber), fresh and dry fish, dairy and poultry products, cottage industry items, wooden furniture, handloom and handicraft items.
Trading in these bazaars would be held once or twice a week, and a spending cap of $50 will be imposed per head. No local tax will be imposed on the trading. Both Indian and Bangladeshi currencies will be accepted.
