Agartala, August 10 (TIWN): Two villagers were kidnapped from Joychandrapara area under Raishyabari police station in Gandacherra sub-division late night on Saturday, officials of the state police said.
A highly placed source in the state police today said that ultras belonging to the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) outfit kidnapped two villagers from JC Para. A group of armed cadres of the banned militant outfit kidnapped Udairam reang and Joriham Reang at gunpoint and pulled back into Bangladeshi soil, the source said.
The kidnap reportedly came after a failed extortion notice was served to the villagers. The police denied having any information of extortion but rushed a huge contingent of additional troops to the spot after receiving the information of kidnap.
Superintendent of Police (Dhalai) said that proper steps were taken to check further escalation of the situation. A combing search operation was launched soon after but none was recovered till latest reports came in.
A local source said that the NLFT team entered the Indian territory in Tripura through JC Para along border pillar 2292 and pulled back into the neighbouring soil after the kidnap. The militant outfit left extortion notices at the Raishyabari CPI (M) party local committee office asking chairman, vice-chairman and functionaries of four village committees of the area to pay money fixed by the ultras.
