DHAKA / AGARTALA / CHITTAGONG, August 6 (TIWN Exclusive): At least 50 Islamic Militant Jamaat cadres are being trained in use of firearms and hit-and-run tactics by a former Bangladesh soldier close to the Islamist organization but guess where ? In a base of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) base in Chittagong Hill Tracts, says reports available with Bangladesh intelligence agencies.A top official at the Bangladesh's National Security Adviser's office told TIWN that the NLFT base 35 kms south of Naikhongcherri , which once housed its 'Panthers' regiment , is now being used for training the Jamaat cadres.
A former JCO of Bangladesh army, who is a Jamaat Rukun , is now training the Jamaat cadres using the base.
The NLFT still has a presence in the base - about 25 to 30 cadres of its Biswa Mohan faction stay there.
But they have made a separate block for the Jamaat trainees.
The GOC of 24th Division of Bangladesh army, based at Chittagong, has been asked to prepare for a full scale assault on this rebel base.
" But it may take time because this is monsoon time and operating against this remote hilly jungle hideout may not be easy from logistics and operational point of view," said a top military official, but condition of strict anonymity.
The Bangladesh intelligence officials say another 50-60 cadres of Jamaat e Islami are undergoing similar training at another base of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) . This base is south-east of Teknaf on the Myanmar-Bangladesh border.
Hasina's government is worried that hit and run raids on government officials and security forces may increase once these Jamaat recruits are ready for operation.
