Dipa arrives Delhi : President congratulates Dipa,  CWG medal winners

New Delhi, August 4 (TIWN): Dipa Karmakar, the Indian Star, Bronze medal winner and the first woman to clinch a medal in athletics at Commonwealth Games - arrived on Sunday evening at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. Govt of India officials, Sports authorities and fans welcomed Dipa at Airport. The President, earlier in the day, had congratulated other sportspersons like Yogeshwar Dutt, Babita Kumari, Vikas Gowda, Geetika Jakhar, Dipa Karmakar and Pawan Kumar for their performances. Dipa won the Commonwealth bronze with an average score of 14.366.

The 20-year-old had scored a mere 13.633 points in the first Vault, the lowest out of eight competitors in the final.

However, in a remarkable comeback Thursday night, Dipa scored the highest in the second Vault with 15.100 to bring up her average to 14.366. Dipa is expected to arrive Agartala on Monday. President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday congratulated sportspersons for winning medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Mukherjee congratulated Seema Punia, Sharath Kamal, Anthony Amalraj and Pinki Rani Jangra for winning medals in their respective games and wished them "very best for all future endeavours".
In separate letters, Mukherjee said: "The nation is proud of their performances."
Seema Punia won a silver medal in women's discus throw while Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj bagged the silver in men's doubles table tennis. Pinki Jangra brought home a bronze medal in women's 48-51 kg boxing.

Dutt (men's freestyle 65 kg) and Kumari (women's freestyle 55 kg) struck gold medals, Jhakar (women's freestyle 63 kg) won a silver, and Kumar (men's freestyle 86 kg) had to settle for a bronze medal in wrestling.

Gowda won gold in discus throw while Karmarkar became the first Indian woman gymnast to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games by bagging a bronze in the vault event.
