AGARTALA, Aug 2 (TIWN): Sluggishness in police activities has resulted in augmentation of road mishaps intensifying the death toll. There has been a simultaneous increase in the number of means of transport. According to statistical survey report, the number of conveyance till December 2013 was at 2,63,529 that is mentioned in the register of Department of Transport. Besides, there are vehicles from outside the state and a few more in the state not detailed in the register.
The statistical report reveal that the number of two-wheelers stand at 1,69,584 out of which 10,220 remained under the Transport department of Unakoti district and 5492 under Dhalai district Transport department. The number of auto-rickshaw stands at 20,244. Besides, there are other means of transport.
As per the government statistical report, a total of 740 road accidents were recorded till November 2013 with the death toll at 208 and 1135 persons sustained serious injuries. Well, recent road mishaps have raised the number. In the road mishaps, 44 persons in North district, 30 in Unakoti district, 37 in Dhalai district, 19 in North district under Rail Police, 15 in Unakoti district and 16 in Dhalai district lost their lives.
Among the injured persons include 49 in North district, 32 in Unakoti district, 73 in Dhalai district and 3 in Rail Police area. The last statistical report revealed that every year 250 persons in average are losing their lives in road mishaps and 1200 are sustaining injuries in average.
