AGARTALA, July 1 (TIWN): A flood like situation has gripped Agartala City and various parts of the state, the Thursday afternoon report said. In Agartala various places including Ambedkar gali's (Ward No-6) many houses were damaged partially, 6 of them were reported much critical. The local people alleged that due to improper drainage system this damage has been occurred at the very beginning of monsoon. This rain however was emerged from Cyclonic Storm Mora will continue to batter parts of Bangladesh, northeast India and northwest Myanmar. There are more chances of rains next 24 hours. National Highways were also blocked many times due to big-trees fall over the roads. State also facing acute power crisis, especially in hilly, ADC and rural Tripura.
Landfall occurred south of Chittagong, Bangladesh, Northeast India, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Flooding rain and mudslides will be the biggest threats along with locally damaging wind gusts.
The extent of damage caused by the cyclone's storm surge will become more clear in the next few days.
The region is particularly prone to devastating storm surges due to the large coastal plain which contains several rivers. This topography along with a high population density has resulted in eight of the top 10 deadliest cyclones in recorded history originating in the Bay of Bengal.
