Udaipur, July 19 (TIWN): A road accident led to violence in the town today with irate mob attacking police and vehicles before ransacking the local police station here. The mob went berserk for over two hours before police conducted a lathi charge to quell the violence.
Five people here were run over by a police vehicle this early morning. Three of them died on the spot and two other sustained serious injuries have to rush to GB hospital at Agartala.. Not only was the vehicle truck torched, fire tenders were prevented from reaching the spot and attacked. A police vehicle was also damaged by the mob.
The National Highway which passes through the town was also blocked. Fearing the mob fury, shops and other establishments downed their shutters. The mob then targeted the local police station. Motorcycles, computer and furniture of the police station were damaged. Police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shell to disperse the mob. According to eye witnesses several rounds was fired in air by police.
Police reinforcements reached the town and carried out a lathi-charge to disperse the mob. “The situation is under control and we have deployed police force to maintain law and order,” informed Gomati district SP T. Sambabdhan.
