AGARTALA, July 18 (TIWN): The Tripura Commission for Women (TCW) today demanded strict punishment for domestic torture on a housewife which ended in brutal murder of the latterat Barbil in Khowai sub-division.

Nitu Dey, a resident of Barbil area in Khowai, was married to one Dilip Dey of Payrabari area in Ambassa sub-division way back in 2008. The marriage was finalized after dowry agreement of Rs. 30 thousand, furniture and other accessories, TCW member secretary Aparna Dey said in an official communiqué. Dey further said that Rs. 25 thousand was paid off to Nitu’s in-laws in several phases to mitigate dowry torture.

The issue off control on July 07 when Nitu’s brother Sajal tried to communicate with her over telephone and met unexplained barriers. He rushed to her in-laws’ residence and came to know that Nitu was admitted at GB Hospital. Her death was confirmed by medical officers on duty at the GB Hospital.

Raising strong protest against the issue, the Women Commission today demanded strict punishment against Nitu’s in-laws to set precedent against dowry crimes. A data from the TCW says that barely 8.62 percent of rape cases filed in Tripura in the last 6 months were found true.

Preliminary statistics say that genuine cases of domestic violence is increasing at a much alarming rate compared to other cases of crime on women.
