Agartala, Oct 4 (TIWN) In view of the growing rate of crimes against women, the Tripura High Court has constituted two fast track courts for speedy trial of cases of offenses against women.
Following the request of the Tripura government, the High Court registrar general Manik Chakraborty issued here a notification Friday saying that all pending cases relating to crimes against women henceforth to be transferred to these two fast track courts.
Mr Chakraborty in his notification said : “The Tripura High Court has declared the west Tripura’s additional district and session judge court and first class judicial magistrate court in Agartala as two separate fast track courts.”
In the just concluded state assembly, state’s law and school education minister Tapan Chakraborty said that after the mass rape incident in New Delhi in December last year, union law minister had requested the Chief Ministers of all states to take steps to set up the fast track courts for speedy trial of cases relating to crimes against women
He said : “I have taken up the matter with the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court. The fast track courts have to be set up preferably with women judges.”
Replying to the queries of the legislators in the state assembly, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said that to take care of the crimes against women, the strength of the women police personnel would be increased from the current eight percent to 20 percent of the total strength of police personnel in the state.
With a population of 3.7 million, the northeastern state has 781 women police personnel now.
Mr Sarkar, who also holds the home portfolio, said : “The state government would set up all women police stations in each of the eight districts and then in all the 23 sub-divisions. At present three all women police stations are operational and another would start shortly.”
There are special women desk in all the 67 police stations across Tripura to deal with the cases of misdemeanor against women.
Responding the demand of the opposition parties, the Tripura government held an all party meeting here in June 24 and finalised multi-pronged strategies to check the menace.
Tripura Chief Secretary Dr Sanjay Kumar Panda told reporters that the state government has proposed tough laws and setting up of fast-track courts to deal with crimes against women.
"The probe relating to crimes against women has to be completed within three months. During this period the accused should not be given bail," Dr Panda said.
According to official reports, in all 447 cases of crime against women since January and till August this year were registered with the police. So far 34 persons convicted of torturing women whereas, 413 accused persons were acquitted of all charges.
Accusing the Left Front government, senior opposition (Congress) leader Ratan Lal Nath said that Tripura tops in the country in crimes against women.
