AGARTALA, April 17 (TIWN): Along with whole India and neighboring Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Visa Office (Now B'desh Asst High Commissioner's Office) situated in Agartala Kunjaban also observed Mujibnagar Day to commemorate the formation of the provisional government of independent Bangladesh in exile during the war of liberation in 1971.

A flag hoisting ceremony was held on Friday in Agartala office. The officials of Bangladesh Visa Office gathered at the high commission to observe the hoisting of their national flag.

Following the Pakistan army sudden attack on unarmed Bangladeshi on the night of March 25, 1971, senior leaders of the Awami League and the elected representatives of Bangladesh assembled at a mango orchard in Baidyanathtala of Meherpur on the day, and constituted the government of independent Bangladesh.
It may be mentioned that on this day in 1971, the provisional Bangladesh government in exile, popularly known as "Mujibnagar" government was formed with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the president and Syed Nazrul Islam as the vice-president.

In absence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was arrested following declaration of country's independence on the night of March 25 and put in a jail, Syed Nazrul Islam acted as the Acting President of the provisional Bangladesh government.
