Agartala, Oct 2 (TIWN): Airport expansion Project is expected to begin within next three to four months as part of expanding infrastructure to upgrade it to an International Airport. Airport Director, S D Barman spoke to TIWN on Wednesday.
He informed that 27.14 acres of land was handed over to the Airport Authority by State government, adding for upgradation 71 acres of land will be required.
The project will include extension of runway to help accommodate wide bodied aircraft and expansion and improvement of the passenger’s amenities. The director said, “Four aero bridge provision will there in the new terminal building, it can handle 1000 passengers both departure and arrival at a time” However the present terminal can handle only 500 passenger. Besides four conveyors belt will also inducted in the new terminal.
He said the new terminal building would be at least double its present size and the size of the apron would be four times bigger than the current size. The director informed that the estimate cost for constructing the new terminal building will be around Rs 250 crore. For beefing up the security in the Airport, 87 CCTV cameras have been installed in the airport. Agartala airport would be elevated to the status of an international airport by two - and – a – half years
