AGARTALA, July 2 (TIWN): Two more were killed across the state in henmalaria epidemic on Wednesday, raising the death toll to 59.Out of 9,136 patients who underwent blood tests across the state today, 1,435 were confirmed to have contacted malaria. The final figures of infected population was found to have crossed 17,121, Healh Minister Badal Choudhury said here today. Speaking to reporters at the civil secretariat here this evening, the minister said that John Philip Reang (2) from Joymanipara of Kanchanpur and Anjali Reang (15) from Hamsapara of Khedacherra in North Tripura district were reported to have died from malaria on Wednesday.
Choudhury further stated that a three member delegation of Médecins Sans Frontières, an international volunteer organization, today reached the state with second generation anti-malaria drugs. The organization earlier assisted Tripura in combating meningococcal meningitis that ravaged parts of Dhalai and North Tripura districts till few years back, the minister added.
Total fever cases across the state have crossed 1 lakh till date since detections started from June 10. Malaria deaths were reported large scale as early as May 26 this year, mostly from Dhalai district.
Health Minister Choudhury today claimed that the outbreak was largely contained in Dhalai district.
