AGARTALA, July 2 (TIWN): The Tripura Urban Employment Programme (TUEP) is expected to initiate avenue plantations and institutional plantations in city areas among other projects this financial year, a highly placed source in the Department for Urban Development said here today.

The source said that the Agartala Municipal Corporation proposed to incorporate certain beautification and cleaning of city spaces with aid from the urban poverty alleviation program in its latest outcome budget proposal.
Interestingly,  the Narendra Modi government at centre recently announced a major shift in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MG NREGS) by transforming the wage employment guarantee more into a tool of effective asset creation.
Speaking at the India Today conclave recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that NREGS should be a 'development guarantee scheme' instead of an 'employment guarantee scheme'. He said that by 'integrating the people and convincing them that they are working for the nation', tangible results could be derived. The new model might involve roadside plantations adopting the Muzaffarnagar roadside plantation plan.
In keeping with the new plan, TUEP is expected to have avenue plantation among other programs like cleaning and beautification of waterbodies, development of a fewbareas including khosh bagaan, Baghajatin Bag etc.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation would extend an additional Rs. 10,000 to selected beneficiaries among urban poor. Hundred small and poor traders in each ward would be selected for the purpose to aid people struggling for funds with their trades, a source in the AMC said.
Tripura was the lone state across India to have started its own urban poverty alleviation scheme – the Tripura Urban Employment Programme (TUEP) in 2009
