KAMALPUR, Feb 13 (TIWN): Black peeper traditionally remains an important part of Indian cuisine. And in recent decades, the product has equipped a good position in the international market. Hence its potentiality as an economic crops has increased.
And the farmers have been parronaged to produce black peeper with horticultural crops like tea. The Spices Board of Union Ministry of Industries and Commerce has come forward in this sector from 2013-14. As a part of it a technical seminar has been arranged by the Board at Darangtilla Tea Garden at Kamalpur. 60 producers from Dhalai district and 20 producers from Unakoti district have participated in it.
Principal Scientist of ICAR Dr. Biswajit Das and Asstt. Professor of College of Agriculture Tridip Bhattacharjee remain present as resource persons. Besides, Additional Director of I&C Department S.C. Das, Deputy Director of Tea Board K.C. Baishya remain also present. MLA Anjan Das has inaugurated the seminar.
The farmers produce an average of 400 kg of black pepper from each plant. And the product costs 500 rupees a kilo in the market.
