AGARTALA, Jan 13 (TIWN): Although demonetization gave certain relief to the customers as vegetable market price extremely downed in last few days, but down the line with the relief from cash-crisis the market price of daily commodities again has been spiked up with sky-rocketing price. Although Chief Minister Manik Sarkar recently has given long lectures on how to increase the GDP rate, but for his own state no policy has been implemented. Tripura is mostly surviving on imported items especially in food related items. Tripura markets are piling up with oranges from Mizoram, whereas Tripura officially show offs its production on oranges, pineapples are very high. Tripura’s GDP growth rate is only 7 %, which is the lowest in the whole country even worse than Jharkhand and any North East State.

Due to demonetization the price had been downed, but again the state is undergoing heavy price hike, resulting resentment among the common people during the whole year. Most importantly Tripura's tradition for orange productivity has almost died now and the small size oranges are available in market at Rs. 10 per piece.

Although orange and Tourism Festival is conducted every year at Jampui Hills in Tripura which is believed to be the only place where beautiful oranges are cultivated, now undergoing massive price of oranges and also the quality of oranges have downed.

Orange plantation started in Jampui hill during the early 60s. It began as a fruit plantation for self consumption. Later on, when markets opened the people realized the economic potential of oranges. New gardens were created and within a few years, almost all families started an orange plantation for commercial purpose in their lands. In course of time income from orange plantations drastically changed the economic conditions and standards of living of the people of Jampui. The quality of orange was so good that it bagged the 1st position at fruits exhibition at New Delhi in the mid 80s.

Since then, Jampui became famous as a place where best quality oranges are grown commercially. With this recognition, more tourists became interested in visiting the area. So, for promotion of tourism, the Information and Culture department of Tripura started the unique Orange & Tourism festival celebration every year at Jampui hill. A large number of tourists, both domestic and foreign, participate and enjoy this festival.

But all those now are bye-gone era, in reality public are buying oranges which are mostly imported items.

After the 3rd  budget was presented by the Central Govt. in 2016 now it is planning for the next budget for 2017-18. The last budget of 2015-16, was mainly focused on agriculture; and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley  challenged to double the income of the farmers. However, along with the 9 pillars of agricultural growth, various schemes were launched for the farmers, but under CPI-M Govt in Tripura the farmers have failed to bring any growth in their yearly production, resulting burning price of vegetables throughout the whole year, experienced by the common men.
