Agartala, June 17 (TIWN): Tripura Higher Education Department is contemplating to start a state university in an attempt to accommodate certain state-specific academic issues which couldn’t be realized due to unique regulations of the Tripura Central University.

Speaking to reporters at the civil secretariat on Tuesday, Education minister Tapan Chakraborty said that the Law Department is currently engaged in formulating a specific Act for initiating a State University. “The Bill is nearly ready by now. The proposal would be raised for discussion in the next assembly session following approval from the state cabinet”, he said.

All twenty-two government general degree colleges of the state are currently operated under the Tripura Central University.

Asked about proposals of venue for the University, Education Minister Chakraborty said it is likely to come up centering the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College campus in Agartala city. “We considered a separate state university since several issues unique for the state couldn’t be accommodate in the guidelines of the central university”, he said.

A highly placed source in the Department later said that the government was considering to start the State University in the MBB campus. “It might even be renamed as Maharaja Bir Bikram University as a sign of respect to the history and tradition of the institute”, the source said.

He added that as of now, most major academic courses would be kept in the syllabus. No theology courses would kept in the syllabus as the UGC had reservations in approving theology courses in any university across the country. Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University alone have theology courses running with approval from the UGC.
