World Bank aided livelihood project disburses Rs. 22 lakh to beneficiaries in 8 months

AGARTALA, June 13: The World Bank aided Northeast rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) disbursed Rs. 22 lakh in a period of eight months to over two thousand Self Help Groups (SHG) in the state, a highly placed source in the Department for Rural Development (RD) said.The source said that 1,069 Self Help groups (SHG) were helped in the timeframe to set up small scale business projects. Each SHG was given a one-time fund of Rs. 80 thousand in the timeframe. The process involved identification of 1,069 existing Self Help Groups (SHG) and recognition of 908 new SHGs for extending assistance.

Out of all 507 youths registered for training as a part of the project awards, 77 youths were imparted training till date. Forty-three of the youths were given placements.

NERLP was conceptualized to involve a total financial projection of Rs. 683.20 crore during the entire 12th Five Year plan period. The project would be implemented in nine blocks of Aizawl and Lunglei districts of Mizoram, 11 blocks of Peren and Tuensang districts of Nagaland, 14 blocks in Sikkim, 24 blocks across and the erstwhile South and North Tripura districts in Tripura.

World Bank representative Adarsh Kumar said during inauguration of the project in Tripura in October, 2013 that NERLP would be targetting 3,00,000 households in 1624 villages of 58 blocks in 8 districts of 4 states in India’s northeast. NERLP is scheduled to be taken over after the plan period of 5 years by NRLM, a central government sponsored poverty alleviation programme. Ministry for DoNER would be sharing 10 percent contribution in the project fund sharing with the World Bank.e North East Rural Livelihoods Project (NERLP) is scheduled to address issues of livelihood enhancement for the rural poor, especially women, unemployed youth and severely disadvantaged in eight districts of the four participating states of the NE region. While Aizawl and Lunglei districts from Mizoram were counted in the list, Peren and Tuensang district were enlisted in Nagaland, South, West and 15 Panchayat wards of East District were listed up from Sikkim. Tripura got West and North Tripura districts in the list.
