AGARTALA, Dec 4 (TIWN): Few passengers got injured at Sipahijala Nouka Ghat area when one Maruti Van collided with a coming Bus .Tripura Traffic Police department and Tripura Police Department have been facing a very tough time to prevent the number of road accidents in the state which are allegedly claiming life of several people for last few months. The numbers of road mishaps are alarmingly increased in the state for last few months but the traffic police department is surprisingly playing silent role instead of taking proper initiative over the road accident issue. According to a statistic of Transport Department, on an average Tripura records three road accidents and a death each day.

In a survey, the concerned departments have found not wearing ISI marked full helmet, rush and negligence driving and overloading are mainly causing maximum number of road accidents, an official said today. Despite several requests from the concerned department, a vast number of bike riders avoid to wear ISI marked full helmet and use to ride the bikes with two pillion riders, he said. In maximum number of cases, casualness of two-wheeler riders was found to be cause behind the road mishaps in the state, he added.

On the other hand, a section of bike riders and drivers of different vehicles raised their voice over the role of traffic police department. They alleged that a vast number of on duty traffic police personnel harass the public and use to take large-amount fine in the name of road safety..

According to some drivers and bike riders, the repairing works and construction of roads in dismal condition by Public Works Department (PWD) also causing few road accidents while making of road dividers by using ropes on the most crowded city roads from the traffic police department are similarly causing number of road accidents as well. Though, the number of vehicles increased in Tripura, but the road status in terms of widening and bigger lining is remained same as it was earlier. Moreover, rush and reckless driving, overloading by the passenger carrying vehicles, insufficient knowledge of traffic rules and regulations are often cause road mishaps in the different parts of the state.

However, the public said that the safety measures and cautions to avoid accidents must be implemented in such a way, which cannot appear to be a cause to harm the people. For example, Helmet can be made compulsory by law or impose a lower speed limit for those who do not use helmet. Issue of Helmet can be made mandatory with the sale of each two wheeler.  Helmet can be made compulsory for pillion riders also. Apart from road safety, the traffic department should also think about the common people.
