AGARTALA, Nov 15 (TIWN) A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, rocked the northeastern states on Tuesday, an official said. There were no reports of any casualties or damage. The tremor was felt at 7.40 a.m. with an epicentre located in Assam's Karimganj district bordering Bangladesh, an official of the Regional Seismological Centre here said. The seven northeastern states -- Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur - are considered by seismologists as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. It's worthy to mention here that calling upon the world community to work unitedly towards disaster risk reduction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently said India is ready to work with other countries to build disaster-resilient infrastructure. Inaugurating a three-day "Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction 2016" here, Modi said India is even ready to share its space technology and resources with any country to deal with disasters across the globe. "We need to think big and innovatively," he said while talking about the effect of disasters on economic growth. "Encourage women in disaster management programmes. We have large number of women to support ... (disaster) affected women," he said.

Giving a 10-point agenda to deal with disasters, the Prime Minister said a network of universities should be developed to effectively deal with disasters.
"Develop network of universities working together on disaster risk management," he added.

Tripura although undergoing massive earthquake risks and every year state is flooding during monsoon, but the awareness about disaster management is yet to come not only among the masses, but Tripura Govt is also showing full negligence in it.

Once a major earthquake comes, people in Capital City Agartala will not even find a place to go out as the buildings are made in such unorganized manner that there are least chance of safety if earthquake comes. Many hostels, offices are so much congested that  there is hardly any safe-place can be found during earthquake.  In 2016 state witnessed atleast 5 earthquakes, but state’s disaster management although very much trained, but has been proven unhelpful in emergency times.
