AGARTALA, Oct 4 (TIWN/IANS) The Tripura Police on Tuesday denied media reports that a large number of paramilitary forces were withdrawn from the north-eastern state for deployment on the western borders of India.

Even though no security threat prevails at present on the India-Bangladesh borders in Tripura, paramilitary forces have been directed to maintain strict vigil, state Director General of Police K. Nagaraj told the media here.

"We have asked the BSF (Border Security Force) and other central paramilitary forces to maintain strict vigil on the India-Bangladesh borders and adjoining villages," he said.

A senior Home Department official said the Home Ministry had directed all north-eastern states to ensure strict vigil in the region, which shares borders with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

"Both central and state intelligence networks have been further strengthened to monitor situation in all eight north-eastern states. Senior security officials were asked to review the situation regularly," the official added.

Nagaraj said additional security arrangements have been made for the Durga Puja festival beginning from Friday, including deployment of over 7,500 security personnel.
