Agartala, May 27 (TIWN): With overloading and fare hike in auto rickshaws on the rise and to prevent overloading that irk passengers, the Transport Department finally decided that the auto-rickshaw would have to take 3 passengers only in the passengers’ seat.

Strict action will be taken against those breaking the rules, said department officials. The decision will get in action by the month of June. The auto-rickshaw unions recently were acknowledged of the decision.

Since days, passengers’ reported that it is very difficult to sit 4 people in the passengers’ seat, but, the concerned department never paid attention to the issue. In recent times, the issue was raised again after a lady was assaulted in Nagerjala-Old Motor Stand route.

After a long time, the department took an appropriate decision which will make the passengers sit comfortably in auto. It is worthy to mention here that except Tripura, the other states have no such rule to carry 4 passengers. Hence, the auto-rickshaws in the state will now follow rule 3+1.

Also, the department officials decided that besides auto-rickshaw, if the other vehicles is found overloaded, department will take legal action against those vehicles. Auto union and a few indiscipline drivers raised allegations against the decision. They said that they have no problem with the new rule, but asked to hike passengers’ fare.

In reply to the demand of auto drivers, the Transport department said fare was determined on the basis of 3+1. As the drivers violated the norm, there will be no hike in fare at any cost. But, there is enough doubt if the CITU and INTUC backed auto-rickshaw union will follow the rule.

Noteworthy, due to the negligence of Transport department, the auto-rickshaws since days have violated traffic norms and resort to overloading and fare hike. Whenever any passenger objects, drivers say that they should board other means of transport and misbehave with them. If the officials of the concerned department do not get down to the ground by June, it will create an obstacle regarding the 3+1 decision to get in action.
