AGARTALA, Sep 3 (TIWN): The practice of students-teaching-students held on Saturday in Tripura schools as the Teachers Day is on Monday.

As tomorrow will be Sunday, and schools to remain close so across Agartala and in other subdivisions the practice of senior students taking class of their junior brothers/ sisters have been done on Saturday itself.

On Teacher’s Day many cultural programmes are to be held which are generally organized by Students for their teachers.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee sanctioned Rs. 20,000/- for each of the student council so that they can organize colourful programmes for their beloved teachers.

However, in Tripura also this day is celebrated with full of enthusiasm. A very traditional practice has been held before the teachers day, when instead of teachers the students took classes, and the teachers in this manner have given a rest for the whole day.

In Agartala in every private and govt. schools including Tulsibati, Netaji School, Sishu Bihar, Ramakrishna Mission, Umakanta Academy--- the preparation is on peak to celebrate Teacher’s Day.

The day was marked for the celebration as Teachers’ Day since 1962 in respect and deference of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was born on 5th September, 1988. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great scholar, philosopher and teacher of modern India and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954. He became the second President of India in 1962.

It was his wish that instead of celebrating his birth day on 5th of September every year, it would be better to celebrate it as Teachers’ Day in whole of India.
