AGARTALA, Aug 22 (TIWN): Where Telengana government has announced a cash award of Rs 50 lakhs for Dipa Karmakar, her own state has failed to provide any cash prize rather has announced the post of Assistant Director and Deputy Director to Dipa and her coach.

Gymnast Dipa Karmakar,  who missed the medal in the Rio Olympics by a whisker, was  felicitated by the Tripura government   on August 22.

Chief minister Manik Sarkar and youth and sports affairs minister Sahid Choudhuri felicitated Dipa Karmakar and her coach Bishweshwar Nandi on August 22 at Swami Vivekananda Maidan here.

Had it been any other State Govt of India- by this time they would have declared a cash prize of Rs 25 Lakhs to 1 crore for bringing the rare honour of becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to clinch a Bronze Medal in Commonwealth Games and represented India from Tripura at the Rio Olympic.

From Telengana Chief Minister to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, every State Government always came forward to felicitate all great sportspersons cutting across party lines and rising above narrow politics but Tripura’s mismanagement has failed to recognise the talents of Tripura in the state.

Dipa is the first Indian gymnast to make the cut in the Olympics in 52 years. She is a specialist at ‘Prudonova’ vault and would also attempt the Tsukahara 720 vault. She is the fifth woman gymnast in the world to be skilled in the Prudonova.

Although the nation was expecting gold from Dipa but unfortunately Dipa dropped to fourth position and narrowly missed gold in the Rio Olympic.

Dipa Karmakar returned empty handed from the Vaults final at the Gymnastics event of Rio 2016 Olympics after she finished the event at fourth position. Karmakar scored 15.066 points in the final but clinching upto 4th position and representing India at such big platform is highly appreciable.

However, Dipa and her coach are highly satisfied as she made it upto Rio and now her target is Tokyo 2020.
