AGARTALA, Aug 17 (TIWN): The Chakma community in Tripura, and other parts of India observed as Black Day on Wednesday. This mourning day was dedicated to their original land, that is Chittagong Hill Tacks, which was given to Pakistan (Presently Bangladesh) during the partition on 1947.
On that time 97 percent people residing over Chittaging hills were non-Muslims. Even then also the land was gifted to Muslims against the interest of the locals there.
Presently, the Chakma Hindus there are allegedly facing toughtime due to fundamentalist attitude of the majority.
According to the Chakmas, it was Sir Cyrill Redcliff Boundary Commission who had awarded the Chittagong Hill Tracts to Pakistan. The decision was taken during a two-day meeting of Chakma National Council of India (CNCI), an organization that was formed to fight for the rights of Chakmas in the Northeast and other parts of the country, held in Guwahati.
The Chakma community of the Northeast also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the issue of alleged human rights violation against the Chakma community in the Chittagong Hill Tract. In Tripura Tribal Hindus sent letter to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to look after the increasing violence against Hindus residing at Bangladesh.
CNCI, Tripura State Committee general secretary Shanti Bikash Chakma, recently said, “The tragedy of Chakma community started since their Chittagong Hill Tracts were given to Pakistan despite more than 95 percent non-Muslim population resided there”.
Many think that Chakmas are migrants in the Northeast. But many of them had been in the Northeast even before partition. Chakmas consider their homeland as Chittagong Hill Tracts
