AGARTALA, Aug 4 (TIWN): With reported apathy of state government towards every major construction sponsored by the central, finally central has taken over the River Feni construction project. Talking to TIWN correspondent, State PWD Chief Engineer Deepak Das said that the project is now taken over by the central government but the state already submitted the DPR. The 150 meter Indo-Bangla river project under State PWD was going at snail pace but the work may get momentum as Central Govt taken over overall monitoring the project. Construction work for River Feni over bridge is likely to get started by December, says PWD Chief Engineer Dipak Kumar Das. PWD chief Engineer Dipak Kumar Das further said that the construction of the River Feni over bridge likely to get start from December.
Chief Engineer further said that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the bridge is submitted to (Ministry of road and Transport highway MORTH) for the consideration of the technical committee of the MORTH.
He further said that once the DPR is accepted the state will call tender for the construction of the bridge which is ambitious project in Tripura.
The 150-metre (490 feet) road bridge over the Feni River will connect the sabroom border town (135 km south of Agartala) of southern Tripura with Ramgarh town in Bangladesh.
The construction of bridge over River Feni would boost the connectivity between two countries, India and Bangladesh.
But now to speed up the project, Modi Govt.has engaged MoRTH instead of State PWD from this project work.
150-metre Feni river bridge project which was planned to commence since 2015 to connect Tripura directly with Chittagong Port, with an estimated cost of Rs. 91 crores, is to get a momentum from this running year.
The Left Front government had asked Modi to persuade Bangladesh to provide access to its water and land routes to transport men and goods for India's north-eastern states when the prime minister visited Tripura.
Access to the Chittagong port and Ashuganj river port in Bangladesh are crucial for the northeastern states to ferry men and materials.
India and Bangladesh have already agreed to allow cargo movement through Chittagong sea port. The proposed bridge will connect southern Tripura border at Sabroom, just 72 km off Chittagong port, with Ramgarh town in Bangladesh. The four-lane bridge will also have related infrastructure like a four-lane approach road.
Proposed Bridge over river Feni between Tripura and Chittagong is delaying, plan was to make South Tripura to become trading hub of two countries one day. But till today no such construction work has taken up.
In a first step towards making Tripura the gateway of NE India and initiated with one small step it'll surely add special value in the cultural and exchange efforts between Tripura and Bangladesh (especially Chittagong). The proposed bridge will connect Southern Tripura's border town Sabroom, 135 km south of Agartala, with the Bangladeshi border town Ramgarh, 300 km Northest of Dhaka.
