SABROOM, July 20 (TIWN) : MLA Pravat Choudhury inaugurated the 67th Blocklevel based Van Mahotsav at Satchand RD Block complex on Wednesday.
During the inauguration programme MLA,Saha Sabhadhipati ,BDO,Forest Officials planted sapling. A total of two thousand saplings were planted during the inaugural ceremony.
Mahotsav which was started as a crusade with a lofty purpose to save the earth will be observed with plantation of saplings in various schools and Anganwadi of the area. Van Mahotsava is an annual tree planting festival in the month of July.
During this festival thousand of trees are planted all over India. In 1950, it was started by K. M. Munshi, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Food at that time. It was started to create awareness in the mind of the people for the conservation of forests and planting of new trees.
The main aim of this initiative is to create awareness among people. This festival has gained immense national importance and every year, millions of saplings are planted all across India in observation of the Van Mahotsav week.
It is expected that every citizen of India has to plant a sapling in the Van Mahotsav week. It helps spread awareness amongst people about the harm caused by the cutting down of trees.
People celebrate Van Mahotsava by planting trees or saplings in homes, offices, schools, colleges, etc. Awareness campaigns are held at various levels. Novel promotions like free circulation of trees are also taken up by various organizations and volunteers.
It needs to be understood that trees are an effective way to prevent global warming and reduce pollution. Van Mahotsava is celebrated as a festival of life. It is advisable to plant native trees they readily adapt to local climate, integrate into eco-system and have a high survival rate. Besides, such trees are helpful in supporting local birds, insects and animals.
