AGARTALA, May 3 (TIWN): Tripura Pradesh Trinamool Congress has decided to oppose the 12 hour strike called by Subal Bhowmik’s gramin congress on May 12 next. This was announced by today by Ratan Chakraborty.
Taking to reporters here today, Pradesh TMC chairman Chakraborty said, “We will stay away from the strike as it has no positive impact, there is no justification of such a strike, which we oppose strongly. Moreover our leader Mamata Banerjee is really not in favour of a strike as it does not achieve much”, However, Trinamool Congress will organize an agitation programme starting on May 5 to portest the ‘ farcical elections’.
It may be recalled that Gramin Congress s (TPGC) has called 12 hour strike from dawn to dusk on May 12, to protest the rigged election to the state’s two Lok Sabha seats, announced Subal Bhowmik party president.
Ruling CPI (M) has strongly opposed the strike call and termed the move as an attempt to run away from reality of an impending massive defeat in Look Sabah polls. It also set aside allegations of manipulation in any manner in the elections which recorded an 85 per cent turnover.
Sources in Congress and BJP also ruled out possibility of giving open support to the strike. They would not oppose the strike as well. The controversy over farcical elections surfaced after a local cable news channel aired footage over breach of election procedures at a polling station in Bishalgarh near Agartala. The election department is conducting a thorough probe into the charges.
