AGARTALA, June 17 (TIWN): Tripura BJP so far failed to capitalize on Modi wave due to bankruptcy of State leadership which reflected in 2014 Lok Sabha elections as party failed to score any victories. Even though mantle changed from ailing Sudhindra Dasgupta to Biplab Deb but lack of political maturity visible as State BJP depending more on Central leaders to pull crowd rather than positioning itself as eggective opposition of Manik Sarkar led CPI-M Govt. It is to be mentioned here that after BJP government came into power at the central, huge numbers of central minister are making visit into the state to boost the State BJP’s popularity across State. Union minister for Heavy Industries and Public enterprises Ananta Geete arrived in the state on one day visit on Friday morning to celebrate the success of two years of Modi government. But how Modi Govt’s success will expand State BJP’s support base in Tripura as state people needs an effective opposition to counter wily CPI-M and its Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

Quite surprisingly, State BJP President Biplab Deb’s choice of  donning a Puttapurthy ‘Sai Baba’ kind of yellow gown may generate laughter but not BJP’s vote bank in Tripura.

After arriving in the state Union Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete along with BJP state president Biplab Deb and others visited Udaiour Matabari temple and offered prayers.

However, he also attended a rally at Udaipur and Agartala  followed by a press meet at BJP office.

State BJP is trying to position itself as main oppostion in Tripura’s political scenario but Tripua is lacking effective leadership.

The situation can be better explained with the situation where BJP in the recently held assembly poll in five states gave a serious competition to the other parties.

The latest assembly election results– Assam to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kerala to the Left, and the return of Mamata Banerjee and J. Jayalalithaa in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu – can hardly be considered a “referendum” on the performance of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre but they do confirm the fact that the Congress, once India’s pre-eminent “national” party with a commanding presence in every state and region, has reduced itself to a regional outfit.

BJP has now come to power in Assam, even if in alliance with important regional players like the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodo Peoples Front, with an individual vote share comparable to the Congress. In West Bengal, it has doubled its vote share – compared to the 2011 assembly elections – and appears to have polled just about one percentage point less than the Congress there.

Its tally of two in West Bengal and one in Kerala may not look impressive but these seats mark the formal debut of the saffron party in the two state assemblies. Indeed, by polling nearly 10.7% of the popular vote in Kerala this time, the BJP has not only improved upon its 2011 performance but has also marginally increased its vote share beyond the 10.3% that the ‘Modi wave’ generated in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. This suggests the BJP is emerging organically in the state and not merely as an external imposition.

Most likely due to political immaturity and lack of prior experience in State Politics, State BJP President Biplab Deb counting more on show-casing outside faces like Union Ministers and RSS Pracharaks, also wearing eye catching yellow 'Sai Baba' kind of dresses to attract masses but  not positioning himself like Sudip Barman or TMC as a strong opposition, so these exercises may prove futile in 2018 Assembly election.
