AGARTALA, June 15 (TIWN): With the collapse of Nh44 along with NHC (alternative highway) the state is now totally disconnected from rest of the part of the country which might provoke a crisis of essential commodities in the state. No respite from the crippled NH44 as there is no improvement in the road condition in Assam's Karimganj district which has been washed away in torrential rains around half a month back and the repairing work is very slow. Hundreds of vehicles are still stranded in both sides. Talking to TIWN correspondent, Assam's Karimganj district Executive Engineer said that nothing can be done until the monsoon season is over. The NH44 and now NHC has literally turned into a paddy field as the black top has been washed away in torrential rain and which has totally ceased movement of vehicle entering and moving out of Tripura. The 630-km-long NH-44 is the only one that links Tripura by road with the rest of India via Shillong and Guwahati.

It is expected that the state might face crisis of essential goods as the regular movement of vehicles has been badly hampered due to the dilapidated condition of the National Highway 44 in Lowerpoa in Assam.

Other than taking any steps to curb the problem of petrol crisis, the Tripura government has blamed the Centre for the "pitiable state of National Highway 44" linking Tripura with the rest of the country through Assam, Meghalaya and north Bengal.

A 22-km stretch of the highway between Patharkandi in Karimganj district of Assam and Churaibari in the state has remained virtually unusable due to lack of timely repair.

A part of the responsibility must be borne by the Assam government also. Despite our repeated requests, the Assam government has done next to nothing to repair their part of the highway, said source.

The perishable goods, including truckloads of fish from Andhra Pradesh, have rotted while a severe fuel crisis has gripped the state.

Few splash of rain over past few days has yet again left the NH44 in a pitiable condition.  Due to the rain, vehicle movement was nearly stopped with the continuous water logged between Lowerpoa to Churaibari Gate, however nothing can be said when will the vehicle movement resumed on the road.

On the one hand the authority says that the maintenance continues round the clock in the year, question arises if maintenance is carried out in the entire year why splash of rain disrupts the traffic movement in the NH44.

continuous downpour along with thunder storm lightning has collapsed NH 44 from rest of the state along with the alternative national highway (NHC) which was opened as an substitute route for the passage of the vehicles. But over a period of time it was seen that both the routes have turned into a death prone zone adding much more woes in travelling through NH44 and NHC for the common people.
