AGARTALA, June 14 (TIWN): When the entire Sonamura Sub-division has turned out to be a den for Ganja Cultivation, SDM Panna Ahmed says to TIWN correspondent that no measures have been adopted now for curtailing Ganja cultivation in the sub-division. His reluctant comment over no drive against Ganja cultivation has sparked off controversy. Question arises why he is reluctant to take action against the ganja Cultivation in the sub-division when the entire sub-division has turned out to be a den for Ganja Cultivation and a web for promoting all smuggling activities where former SDM Subhasis Das has destroyed crores of Ganja from Sonamura during his time in the chair. According to the sources, smuggler backed party people removed honest SDM Subhashis Das from his post and they installed their man in SDM post in Sonamura to continue with the smuggling in Sonamura division. Talking to TIWN correspondent, Sonamura SDM Panna Ahmed on Monday said that at present no drive is taken against Ganja Cultivation and it will be taken when the right times come.However, question arises why the administration is silent when Ganja is cultivated in a huge amount at Sonamura and is smuggled to the neighboring countries.

 Despite of so much of corruption carried out under the eye if administration why is SDM reluctant to take any action.

He further said drive against ganja Cultivation will be taken once times come.

Talking to TIWN correspondent earlier, mentioning about his experience in the Ganaja elimination drive SDM of Kamalpur Subhasis Das Chakraborty on Wednesday said that his drive against the elimination is incomplete. Before his transfer he could not complete the drive but the drive against the Ganja plantation is still continuing.

Cannabis is grown on a large scale in interior and inaccessible areas of the region, particularly in Sonamura and Boxanagar and also in many parts of the State. Since most of these plantations are tucked away in hills and forests, government agencies have a tough time destroying these.

When it comes to narcotics, no amount of laws seems to be enough to reign in the production and distribution of banned substances.  People cultivate the Ganja plants and do business for crores and also smuggle to Bangladesh to fetch hefty amount of money.

While hundreds of smugglers based in Tripura are sending spurious Phensedyl, a cough syrup, with an exceedingly high dose of codeine and other drugs to Bangladesh virtually by the truckload, hundreds of acres of remote land in West Tripura have become sprawling ganja plantations.

However, despite several government agencies are coordinating the drive and making people aware of the hazards of its cultivation but it remains a lucrative business smuggled mainly to Bangladesh.
