AGARTALA, June 13 (TIWN): Continuous downpour along with thunder storm lightning has collapsed NH 44 from rest of the state along with the alternative national highway (NHC) which was opened as an substitute route for the passage of the vehicles. But over a period of time it was seen that both the routes have turned into a death prone zone adding much more woes in travelling through NH44 and NHC for the common people.Although Assam Highway roads commissioner PC Bora with the initiative of BJP government at Assam along with others visited the NH 44 road between Lowerpoa to Churaebari (upto Tripura entrance) section and assured that they will take step for the renovation of NH44 and if required the NH44 will be kept closed and the alternative Highway will be opened for the movement of the vehicles. However, incessant rains over past few days have collapsed the NH44 along with the alternative highway route too.National highway 44 is one such road which gets worsened even for small rains. The condition of the road deteriorated due to heavy rains. As it is the only highway which connects Tripura with the rest of the country, the transport completely blocked.

Thousands of vehicles stranded at Assam’s Lowerpoah area as the Assam-Agartala NH-44 virtually turned into paddy field due to heavy monsoon since April.

The deplorable condition of National Highway 44 the only road connectivity that links mainland India with the eastern part of Meghalaya, Barak Valley in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura has for a long time now remained a harrowing experience for helpless commuters.

It is to be mentioned here that movement of vehicles have also break down at the alternative national highway route as the road has turned into a paddy field. A dozer is used for the lifting of the vehicles which get stuck in the middle of the road. Many private and tripper cars gets block in the road and the dozer charges Rs1500 to Rs 2000 and some times more than that in lifting the vehicles.

However, there are no police or any person from the authority bench is deployed in the area. Day after day people are facing tough time due to the poor condition of NH44 and the authority is silent in taking any action.

Road infrastructure in the Northeast is very poor and undoubtedly the region is strategically very important from the point of view of development of socioeconomic infrastructure. In the North East Tripura is totally a landlocked state and is linked to the rest of the country only with National Highway44 and this road is the life line for the people of Tripura. However, the condition of this border road is very pathetic and is not moveable in many stretches.
