AGARTALA, May 28 (TIWN): Normal life in the states capital came to a grinding halt today as torrential rains wreaked havoc in the city and its suburbs leading to cancellation of traffic movement services that left thousands of commuters stranded.

The commuters claimed the downstream waterway of the drain has been completely blocked that has resulted in accumulation of water and flooding on the upstream side. The water has started coming onto the road and there is a threat of the road being blocked as this is a very high traffic corridor between Melarmath to Kaman Chowmuhani.

The so-called decision after which the AMC authority closed all drains by concrete cover, the cleaning of soil and garbage was stopped resulting chocked drains as it cannot carry water and the water floods randomly on the streets.

Commuters got stranded in many parts of the city as major roads were flooded due to poor condition of drainage lines.

Commuters were stuck for a long time in the morning rush hour traffic in several parts of Agartala city.

Since early morning, Agartala received frequent spells of rains, flooding roads and slowing down traffic at many places, motorists alleged.

Localites alleged traffic jams from many parts of the city, including IGM road, central road, Aralia, Sakuntala road and Motor stand in the heart of the capital.

Vast areas in Agartala virtually went under water.

Two-wheeler riders took refuge under the shed of the shops and trees here to escape the rains, adding to the woes of other motorists as the scooters and motorcycles blocked a portion of the roads.

Major snarls were reported from the Paradise Chowmuhani to Post office Chowmuhani road as the dug up roads added to the woes of the commuters. Residents have reported that some of the roads were completely choked as several vehicles broke down on the flooded roads. The Auto rickshaws were seen adopting other route to reach to the destinations as travelling through the water-clogged road would be problematic. In some places the auto drivers have asked many passengers to get down from the auto as the drivers will not travel through such massive water logged in the city.

Incessant rains lashing Agartala disrupted normal life resulting water-logging of tracks and in low-lying areas. Many of the office goers, school goers were stuck up in middle of the road and could not reach to their destinations on time. Even the school buses were seen stranded on the road due to heavy water clogging the major parts of the roads.
