Rain uproots tree, damaged electricity wires, City reels under power cuts: laying of underground power cables is a long distant dream in Tripura

AGARTALA, May 3 (TIWN): Load-shedding due to the rain storm made life miserable for Tripura’s commuters since Sunday evening as the inadequate electricity supply continued for almost more than 10 hours.

Incessant rains since Sunday disrupted power supply for more than 10 hours in several areas of the city like .The worst affected areas were the areas where trees fell damaged overhead lines, disrupting power supply. The supply was intermittent and residents had to suffer disruptions for more than 10 hours.

Due to rains and gusts of wind, the branches of trees fell on overhead lines and now Phase-by-phase, the supply was being restored.

The rain along with a thundering storm has also uprooted hundreds of trees and telephone and electricity poles and triggered panic among the people of the state. No serious casualties have fortunately been reported from anywhere, however.

Engineers and workers have been working round-the-clock to restore both electric supply and vehicular movement in Tripura.

Life and business has been largely affected due to power cuts enforced for hours recently.Though getting respite from the scorching heat, heavy rains crippled normal life. Within 24 hours of heavy downpour across the state disrupted electricity connections in few areas. Power was disrupted in few areas like Dukli, Badharghat, Milanchakra, Milanshangha, Battala and other places of the capital city and the rural Tripura creating problem for the people.

Storm hit various remote areas grounding several electric pillars. The storm caused huge damage to the electricity transmission line in different areas. Several electric pillars were uprooted after trees fell into transmission line. Electric poles were uprooted in the squalls, affecting the movement of vehicles in the cyclone-affected rural areas along with the capital city.

TSECL is yet to finish the work of laying underground power cable which continues to pose threat to the common people. With the deplorable condition of the poles it has becomes necessary to lay underground power cables. The central government has sanctioned Rs 165 crores for Tripura to lay underground electricity cable. Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has taken the work to lay a wide underground network of high and low tension wires through towns with this fund. The funds have been sanctioned for 16 towns of the state, work for Agartala has started. Although it was expected to complete the work by March 2016 but the work shows  that it will keep on lingering.
