May Day observed across the state

AGARTALA, May 1 (TIWN): Along with the nation, the historic May Day is being observed in the state on Sunday with a fresh vow to establish the rights of workers.

May Day, also known as International Workers’ Solidarity Day, commemorates the historic uprising of working people in Chicago, USA, at the height of a prolonged fight for an eight-hour workday.

The day is a public holiday.

The state is observing the day with various programmes.

Aiming to safeguard the interest of labors, keeping parity with the entire country, the state today observed May Day also termed as ‘Labor Day’.

As a part of the day, celebrations were held by Tripura Bidyut karmi union, CPI-M party office, CITU office, state bank and all across the nation.

It is to be mentioned here that on the occasion of May day, CPI-M party secretary Bijan Dhar hoisted the party flag at party office.

The first Labor Day celebration in our state was organized on 1955. Labor Day is a nationwide bank and public holiday. The holiday is tied to labor movements for communist and socialist political parties. Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Labor Day has its origins in the labor union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. However, in recent years, the celebration of this day has taken a new turn, where the workers and trade unions demand to safeguard their interests and give the economic reforms a humane face.

The labor movement started on May 01, 1886 in Chicago of United States. Some labor organizations in the country called on strike because of they wanted to an 8-hour working days. 

8-hour working days are supposed to be the standard in many countries around the world. ‘Labor Day’ was therefore selected as a day for rallies, processions and speeches. ‘Labor Day’ is a most important holiday in United States, Russia and other socialist nations. In India, ‘Labor Day’ is a public holiday.

‘Labor Day’ is an event observed on May 1 in many countries around the globe. ‘Labor Day’ is now frequently a day for processions and parades. On the ‘Labor Day’, many labor organizations conduct March. Nevertheless, in current years, the commemoration of this day has obtained a new roll, where the workers and trade organizations claim to protect their safety and give the financial growth a humane countenance.
